  • Alex Witt reflects on lasting friendships this Mother's Day

     -

In a Mother’s Day piece for the Desert Sun, MSNBC anchor, Alex Witt discussed the impact her mother’s involvement with the “Birthday Club” has had on her.  In March, Alex, her mother Colette and dozens of other ladies celebrated 50 years of the club that started in Los Angeles by 14 wives of doctors who would get together each month to celebrate birthdays.  This was the first time that the ladies included their daughters, daughter-in-laws and granddaughters in the celebration.

For Alex, the sisterhood that her mother was part of influenced her view on friendships.  She said, “I watched them and I'd like to say they influenced me in the way I conduct myself in my friendships…It was like I was taught a lesson of friendship, loyalty, commitment.”

  • "Twilight of the Elites" reviewed by Publishers Weekly

     -

Chris Hayes, host of MSNBC's "Up," has a new book coming out in June - it's called "Twilight of the Elites: America After Meritocracy." In advance of the book's release, Publishers Weekly posted a starred review on their site.

From Publishersweekly.com:  Calling the decade of the 2000s the “fail decade,” Hayes, editor at large of the Nation and host of MSNBC’s Up w/ Chris Hayes, highlights the implosion of trusted American institutions—Enron, Wall Street, Congress, the Catholic Church, and Major League Baseball—tracing the origins of the present crisis of authority to our elite meritocracy. While the WASP establishment emphasized “humility, prudence and lineage,” the current meritocracy celebrates raw ambition, achievement, and brains, and it’s learned to embrace the alarming inequality that keeps its members near the top. The result, Hayes notes, is a society

with extremely high and rising inequality, without social mobility, presided over by overachievers who enjoy tremendous financial and political clout, yet face no actual punishment for failing at their duties. The lively and well-informed Hayes warns that if we ignore our extreme inequality, those at the top become more prone to corruption, social isolation, and failure. As examples, he pinpoints the devastating effects of social distance that led to recent scandals and catastrophes: the fundamental gap between priests and the parishioners whose children were victimized; the disproportionate distance between the civilian elite and our soldiers; and during the financial crisis, the distance between those who were bailed out and those were not. Offering feasible proposals for change, this cogent social commentary urges us to reconstruct our institutions so we can once again trust them.

  • President Carter on MSNBC's "Jansing & Co."

     -

MSNBC's Chris Jansing sat down with President Jimmy Carter earlier this week to discuss the Secret Service scandal, President Obama's chances of re-election, his thoughts on Mitt Romney as a presidential candidate, and the issue of Super PACs and corporations in campaign fundraising. Check out the interview and transcript from today's "Jansing & Co." below.

MSNBC’S CHRIS JANSING: What did you think when you heard about what happened in Cartegena?

PRESIDENT CARTER: I had two feelings…one is grief that it happened. Secondly, that it was a small minority of Secret Service agents who were caught up maybe in a local environment - it was extraordinary. I have had more than 200 Secret Services agents work with me before during and after I was president, and I would say that there's no other single group of public servants that I've ever known that would equal their standards of morality and proper activity and proper service and dedication to their very dangerous and difficult job.

  • Political analysis and personalities propel MSNBC ahead

     -

In an online article, Bloomberg Businessweek asks: "Has CNN's All-News Strategy Become Old News?" Yes. The proof? MSNBC’s prime-time lineup has topped CNN in the 25-to-54 audience for three consecutive years. Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC, explains how the network has successful grown its audience.

“In the old model, breaking news was the lifeblood of cable news networks. But chasing one legal story after another, we found we didn’t have an identity. Today the lifeblood is being true to who we are.”

It is the political analysis and captivating personalities at MSNBC that have propelled it past CNN.

  • LA Times: MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry brings her analytical POV to cable news

     -

Melissa-Harris Perry is earning praise from the press and her MSNBC colleagues alike. The Los Angeles Times article highlights Harris-Perry's hectic schedule, which includes teaching classes at Tulane University on weekdays and flying to New York on weekends for her eponymous TV show.

Harris-Perry is one of just a few African-American women anchoring a cable-news program. Her unique perspective reaches a wide audience thanks to her weekend show, "much more than I could ever do with my books," she says. Harris-Perry covers everything from pop culture trends to political stories.

Her refreshing take on news reporting has been well received by her colleges at MSNBC, but Melissa Harris-Perry is not satisfied. Harris-Perry's pleas for Beyoncé to appear on her show have not been met, but “Phil Griffin can fire me any time he wants after I have Beyoncé,” she says, “I just need a TV show long enough for that.”

Read the rest of the Los Angeles Times article here, and catch "The Melissa Harris-Perry Show," weekends at 10am ET.
